Elizabeth Busbee interviews Goddess Cecilia, an educator and consultant who organizes Sex Week Boston, an educational event scheduled for May 11-18, 2025. This is the sixth in a monthly series that examines erotic life from an unconventional point of view.
ERB: What is the location and format of Sex Week Boston? What will the event include?
GC: Sex Week Boston is a celebration of a variety of sexual justice, queer and trans liberation, and sexual freedom events, organizations, and businesses in the Greater Boston area. As such, events are very much decentralized and occurring all over the city and neighboring towns. Events will include poetry, comedy, burlesque, educational workshops, Boston Sex Trivia, and the New England Sex Ed Conference.
ERB: It seems like a lot of people in puritan New England struggle with a lack of sex education, both in schools and at home. Are there some good online resources you can recommend for our readers?
GC: Yes! We’re huge fans of Scarleteen.com and SexPositiveFamilies.com for more generalized topics for a variety of ages. SelfServeToys.com is an Albuquerque, NM, based shop that has a catalog of recorded workshops from fantastic educators. KinkAcademy.com has a comprehensive library of videos and articles ranging from health and wellness to kink.
ERB: Do you think sexuality education is even more important these days? What is Sex Week Boston doing to help with that challenge?
GC: Sexuality education is even more of a necessity these days because it seems that misinformation and fearmongering spread so much faster through social media.
Our vision for sex education comes from a perspective of intersectional liberation. This means recognizing the ways that sexism, racism, classism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, capitalism, and other systems of oppression impact all our lives. It also means pushing back against these oppressive systems, both in our own lives and in our education and advocacy efforts.
By hosting Sex Week Boston, inspired by the many colleges and universities who host Sex Weeks as well as events like Restaurant Week, our hope is to expand what sex education can look like while embracing sexuality as part of the diverse human experience.
ERB: The event is being organized by women affiliated with two sexuality education organizations. Could you tell me a bit about those groups and what they do?
GC: Mer-Made for Pleasure is a sexuality and pleasure education organization anchored in community and advocacy. I founded and currently lead Mer-Made for Pleasure. We facilitate pleasure-centered workshops, provide personal consultations, and cultivate spaces where folks can expand and embody their pleasures. Sex Week Boston was my brainchild. MerMadeForPleasure.com is also where you’ll find a cultivated listing of pleasure toys and accessories.
Pleasure Pie is a sex positive education organization in Boston. Their approach to sex education is based in sexual justice and intersectional liberation. They celebrate diverse sexualities, bodies, relationships, genders, and desires in everything they do. Pleasure Pie creates sex positive art and zines and leads shame-free sex ed workshops. They also put together Boston’s Sex-Positive Newsletter each month.
The founders of both organizations have worked closely together for many years, and in the last year collaborated to bring back Sex Trivia to Boston and now Sex Week Boston.
ERB: Where can our readers find out more about your event?
GC: SexWeekBos.com is where you’ll find detailed information about the week as well as details about each of the individual events. We’re also on Instagram @SexWeekBos.
