Collecting Inspiration: Edward C. Moore at Tiffany & Co. at The Met
June 9–October 20, 2024 Edward C. Moore (1827–1891)—the creative force who led Tiffany & Co. to unparalleled originality and success during the second half of the 19th century—amassed a vast collection of decorative arts of exceptional quality and in various media, from Greek and Roman glass and Japanese baskets to metalwork from the Islamic world. These objects were a source of inspiration for Moore, a noted silversmith in his own right, and the designers he supervised. The exhibition Collecting Inspiration: Edward C. Moore at Tiffany & Co. will feature more than 180 extraordinary examples from Moore's personal collection, which was donated to the Museum, alongside 70 magnificent silver objects designed and created at Tiffany & Co. under his direction. Drawn primarily from the holdings of The Met, the display will also include seldom seen examples from a dozen private and public lenders. A defining figure in the history of American silver, Moore played a pivotal role in shaping the legendary Tiffany design aesthetic and the evolution of The Met’s collection. For more information

In the early 1800s, when the prevailing belief was that the earth was 6,000 years old and had been shaped by Noah’s flood, James Gates Percival showed that the traprock in the Connecticut valley was volcanic and far older. Housley is the author of eleven books. Her poems and essays on the interconnection between science and the humanities have appeared in many national publications. She has served as a scientific editor in the field of materials science and has led adult education seminars at Trinity College and Wesleyan University. For more information
Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion at The Met
Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion at The Met
May 10–September 2, 2024 The Costume Institute’s spring 2024 exhibition, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, reactivates the sensory capacities of masterworks in the Museum’s collection through first-hand research, conservation analysis, and diverse technologies—from cutting-edge tools of artificial intelligence and computer-generated imagery to traditional formats of x-rays, video animation, light projection, and soundscapes. When an item of clothing enters the Costume Institute collection, its status is changed forever. What was once a vital part of a person’s life is now a motionless ‘artwork’ that can no longer be worn or heard, touched, or smelled. This exhibition reanimates these objects, helping us experience them as they were originally intended—with vibrancy, dynamism, and life. For more information

Compagnia de’ Colombari – King Lear At University Theater New Haven
Compagnia de’ Colombari – King Lear At University Theater New Haven
June 14, 15 16, 2024 Compagnia de’ Colombari’s KING LEAR, adapted and directed by Karin Coonrod, is a raw, primal, and potent “paper crown” Lear that strips down the Shakespearian classic to its essence through a vigorous exploration of the text and characters’ psyches and motivations. An ensemble of ten actors ranging in age and gender all embody King Lear at the beginning. One by one, they strip off their paper crowns, transform into other characters, and conduct a take-over of the text and the theatre space. Spreading across the play's treacherous psychic cartography, the performers dig deep into the internal and external voyage of a mighty king who loses and then finds himself again after arduous challenges. This fresh, vital, and urgent exploration of encountering oneself is a journey of a fractured soul and a broken community discovering wholeness through almost unbearable suffering. *Festival Friend, Festival Family, Supporters Circle, Premiere Circle, and Founders Society Insiders are invited to join us for a post-show artist toast after this performance! Furnace Gallery: Sharon Butler: Buildingdrawing: Falls Village
June 1 – July 6. In the spirited and mischievous Buildingdrawing, Sharon Butler has merged the languages of drawing and sculpture by hanging drawings, interspersed with elements of collage and installation, with curtain clips on a rolling grid of metal shelves. Inspired by peddlers’ carts, the shelves are replete with motley objects and function as portable mini-galleries or project spaces. They can be maneuvered around the gallery, so that the drawings and other items sway, jingle, and jostle, like housewares sold itinerantly in a different era. For more information
