Whitfield Museum Hosts Trades Day
Whitfield House 248 Old Whitfield St, GuilfordAll ages are invited to immerse themselves in a free program exploring the trade of woodworking with hand tools. The event will be held 10:00-4:00 on Sunday, June 16, 2024 at the Henry Whitfield State Museum. TradesUp will offer a STEAM-based learning experience with hands-on activities for participants to gain experience in skills such as basic math, measuring, and hand-eye coordination while developing a sense of confidence and self-sufficiency. TradesUp, a non-profit organization based in Kent, Connecticut, provides opportunities to try the trades and experience the joy of hands-on creating, making, and problem-solving. Prominent Connecticut woodworker Rick Liegl will also be demonstrating the timeless techniques he uses in carving his woodwork projects, sharing insights about his collection of antique hand tools, and answering questions. Trades Day will take place rain or shine. Admission to the Whitfield House and Visitor Center exhibit galleries is also free. Support provided by Connecticut Humanities. Celebrate the diverse cultures that give the Lower East Side and Chinatown its identity alongside talented artisans, stage and street performers, and visitors from near and far! Set in front of the Museum's landmark Eldridge Street Synagogue home, the festival takes over one block of Eldridge Street between Canal and Division Streets for a folklore fest unlike any other with a medley of Chinese, Jewish, and Puerto Rican tastes, sights, sounds, and crafts for people of all ages to enjoy! The street festival event is FREE and open to the public, and egg rolls, egg creams, and empanadas will be available for purchase.
