A Conversation with Artist Mohamad Hafez at the Yale Peabody Museum

Yale Peabody Museum 170 Whitney Ave, New Haven

The artist and architect Mohamad Hafez channels the complexities of his homeland Syria in his art. Using found objects, paint and scrap metal, Hafez creates surrealistic Middle Eastern streetscapes that incorporate the ancient and the new in a kaleidoscope of detail and color. His art installation “Eternal Cities,” on display in the Yale Peabody Museum’s second floor gallery “Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia,” incorporates original ancient artworks, historic photography, and 3D replicas of objects—along with a few real ones— from Yale’s collection, vividly revealing multiple layers of history. On June 21, Hafez will come to the Peabody’s Central Gallery to share his thoughts about life, art, and food, among other topics, in a conversation with Agnete Lassen, curator of the Yale Babylonian Collection, who worked closely alongside the artist to realize his vision. Marcia Inhorn, William K. Lanman Jr. Professor of Anthropology and International Affairs, will introduce the event. For more information

2 Day Workshop: AN INCLUSIVE FUTURE FOR SCIENTIFIC FIELDWORK at the Yale Peabody Museum

Yale Peabody Museum 170 Whitney Ave, New Haven

Who does scientific research matters. It influences the questions that are asked, the insights that are made, and who leads the next generation. However, different kinds of research are not equally welcoming and accessible to all. Fieldwork is an integral part of the earth, life, and social sciences, but has unique logistical constraints, opportunities, and impacts. These considerations affect who becomes a part of field-based science. There are growing efforts to make scientific fieldwork more inclusive, but these are often siloed or institution-specific, limiting their potential to solve problems that cross-cut disciplines.
