The 2024 #DontTrashLISound Beach Clean-Up at Ocean Beach Park

September 21 @ 11:30 am - 2:00 pm

Clean Shores events at Ocean Beach Park conclude 2024 #DontTrashLISound campaign

The first 100 people to stop by the Connecticut Sea Grant informational table at Ocean Beach Park, 98 Neptune Ave., New London, on Saturday Sept. 21 will receive free reusable water bottles and information about alternatives to single-use plastics during an event to conclude the 2024 #DontTrashLISound campaign.

Connecticut Sea Grant is also partnering with the Gerena family on a cleanup at the park that day from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cleanup coincides with many other beach cleanups around the world on International Coastal Cleanup Day. Volunteers are welcome to participate by registering at: https://www.savethesound.org/take-action/volunteer/2024-coastal-cleanup/ and will also receive free water bottles. Buckets, gloves and trash grabbers will be provided.

Each of the free water bottles to be given out will display the logo for the “Clean Shores” project, an intiative being developed among Long Island Sound state and municipal beaches in Connecticut and New York with leadership from Connecticut Sea Grant. The purpose of the project is to reduce plastic and other trash being brought to beaches by visitors by encouraging reusable alterantives to single-use plastics, and by reducing plastic trash generated at concession stands.

The 2024 #DontTrashLISound campaign, now in its eighth year, began on Aug. 17 with a cleanup at Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison in which 30 volunteers collected 64 pounds of trash in 90 minutes. The campaign also includes daily social media posts and giveaways of “Protect Our Wildlife” stickers for reusable water bottles and travel mugs.

Connecticut Sea Grant, headquartered at the UConn Avery Point campus in Groton, is one of 34 Sea Grant programs supported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in coastal and Great Lakes states that encourage the wise stewardship of our marine resources through research, education, outreach and technology transfer.
