OF BIRDS & STARS: EXPLORING THE WONDER OF BIRD MIGRATION IN CONNECTICUT

This interactive presentation by Meredith Barges, Co-Chair of Lights Out Connecticut, will celebrate the beauty of the night sky as the nocturnal habitat of migratory birds returning to Connecticut after their winter stays in South America. You will learn more about the spectacular secret lives of migratory songbirds, the long-distance journeys they make twice each year to Connecticut — and why they need dark skies to navigate. We will also explore safe, simple steps you can take at your home, business, and neighborhood to help make the night sky safer for birds by reducing light pollution and protect the intact nocturnal ecosystem. This event is free & open to the public.
About the Presenter:
Meredith Barges grew up in rural Vermont but has lived in major cities for most of her life. It was while living near the North Woods of Central Park that she became an avid bird watcher and bird advocate. She is passionate about helping people to connect to the complex lives of birds and the role that we can play in making our towns and cities safer for birds. She brings years of nonprofit experience to her role as co-chair of Lights Out Connecticut, a statewide advocacy project of the Menunkatuck Audubon Society. In spring 2023, she helped to lead a successful campaign to pass Public Act No. 23-143, Connecticut’s “lights out CT law.” She is co-author of “Building Safer Cities For Birds: How Cities Are Leading The Way On Bird-Friendly Building Policy” (published by American Bird Conservancy and Yale Law School)
