Guided Tour: Bibliophilia X Taphophila: The Dead Shall be Read: Grove Street Cemetery New Haven

Two great archives are neighbors in New Haven: Grove Street Cemetery, the nation’s first chartered burial ground, and Beinecke Library, North America’s largest building dedicated exclusively to rare books and and manuscripts. Both exist to make the past accessible in the present for the future, and both offer many encyclopedias of stories to explore and inspire. Michael Morand, communications director of Beinecke Library and a founding co-chair of the Friends of the Grove Street Cemetery, will lead an insider’s tour, starting with some of the heroes interred in the cemetery, such as William Grimes, Alexander Du Bois (W.E.B.’s grandfather), and Theodore Winthrop, along with the founders of American scientific education, geography, lexicography, and more. The tour will continue at the nearby Beinecke Library, with a close-up look at the building and some of its treasures, including materials related to Grimes, Du Bois, Winthrop, Webster, Gibbs, and others interred in the Grove Street Cemetery. Connecticut’s Historic Gardens Day at The Stanley-Whitman House

Stanley-Whitman House 37 High Street, Farmington

Stanley-Whitman House is one of fifteen distinctive historic sites and gardens in Connecticut that will be offering tours as part of Connecticut's Historic Gardens Day, Sunday, June 23rd from 12 - 4 pm. The Museum will be offering free historic garden tours in its "Museum Without Walls" which include its dooryard garden, hops and dye garden, and early settlers garden. Our garden guides will talk about the utilitarian, culinary, and medicinal uses of plants grown in our 17th Century inspired Early Settlers and Hops and Dye Gardens and in our 18th Century inspired Dooryard Garden by pointing out the plants that colonists brought over with them from the Old World and those that they were introduced to by Indigenous peoples. Dooryard gardens were areas of active seasonal work, such as laundry, soap- and candle-making, butchering, and dying. Far from formal beautiful spaces, these garden areas served functions that were messy, smelly, and often crowded with people, animals, and equipment. What visitors experience at Stanley-Whitman House on June 23 will provide an interesting juxtaposition to historic gardens of later periods, which were primarily places of beauty and contemplation. Reservations are needed and can be made online. For more information

Stamford Acoustic Music Circle

St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church 1231 Washington Blvd, Stamford

Hey fellow musicians! I’m Larissa and I’m the new organizer of the Acoustic Circle! Let’s keep this group going! I look forward to meeting you and making music together. The Greenwich Acoustic Music Circle (GAMC) is a monthly play/sing along jam for those interested in playing and singing acoustic rock.  We welcome people at INTERMEDIATE  levels of ability. Bring one PRE-1980's song and one POST-1980's song, in this way, we are not a traditional "folk music" circle. About half way through the evening, we take a break to eat/drink/mingle. It's simply an evening of sharing great songs with others in a friendly and supportive environment. For more information
