Indie Lens Pop-Up Film Screening 2: We Want the Funk: PBS at The Schubert in New Haven
April 16 @ 6:00 pm

By Stanley Nelson
Stanley Nelson’s syncopated voyage through the history of funk music, spanning from African, soul, and early jazz roots, to its rise into the public consciousness. Featuring James Brown’s dynamism, the extraterrestrial funk of George Clinton’s Parliament Funkadelic, transformed girl group Labelle, and Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat, the story also traces funk’s influences on both new wave and hip-hop.
Shubert Theatre will debut the new season of Indie Lens Pop-Up, the long-running community screening series that has brought people together for community-driven conversations around its thought-provoking documentaries. Patrons will have the opportunity to view the films before they air on television on INDEPENDENT LENS, PBS’s award-winning documentary anthology series.
