Gallery Talk – Sleuthing at the Seams: The Primus Dress with Bethani Blake and Ned Lazaro at Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art

December 21, 2024 @ 1:00 pm

Learn about the Freedomways exhibition with Bethani Blake, associate curator for the African diaspora, and Ned Lazaro, associate curator of costume & textile, as they take a close look at a dress owned by Rebecca Primus (1836–1932) of Hartford. Primus was an educator and descendant of an early free Black family. Her dress may have been made by her mother, dressmaker Mehitable Primus (1817–1899). Blake and Lazaro share the significance of this rare surviving garment and what it says about Black culture in Hartford during the nineteenth-century clothing trade. Meet outside the Museum Shop.
