Film Screening: Yves Klein Monotone-Silence Symphony

St. James Church 865 Madison Avenue, NYC

On the occasion of the exhibition Yves Klein and the Tangible World, Lévy Gorvy Dayan will present a performance of Klein’s Monotone-Silence Symphony at St. James’ Church, New York, on Wednesday, May 1, at 6:30 pm. Conducted by Petr Kotik and performed by the orchestra and choir of the S.E.M. Ensemble, the symphony is composed of a single note held for twenty minutes followed by twenty minutes of silence. Producing the sensation of endless duration, Klein describes the symphony as “ of one unique continuous ‘sound,’ drawn out and deprived of its beginning and of its end, creating a feeling of vertigo and of aspiration outside of time…. In the world of our possibilities of conscious perception, it is silence—audible presence.” For more information

Alison Watt: INDEPENDENT NEW YORK at Lévy Gorvy Dayan

Lévy Gorvy Dayan 19 East 64th Street, NYC

May 9 - June 28, 2024   Widely regarded as one of the leading painters working in the UK, Alison Watt won the National Portrait Gallery’s prestigious annual award in 1987 while still a student at Glasgow School of Art. She subsequently became known for her figurative paintings, often female nudes, before beginning in the late 1990s to focus on depictions of fabric, which had previously acted as support or backdrop for her compositions. Rather than eliminate the figure, these paintings evoke the human body through its absence. Watt’s work has always been rooted in a deep engagement with the past, particularly the props and attributes of historical European painting and sculpture. Although the human figure is no longer explicit in Watt’s work, it is often implied. More recently, her work has focused on the relationship between the genres of still life and portraiture, exploring the possible narratives around everyday objects. For more information

DAVID DUNLOP- LIGHT FANTASTIC at Susan Powell Fine Art

Susan Powell Fine Art 679 Main Street, Madison

We are honored to present new works from this versatile and award-winning artist. There will be an opening reception on Friday, May 10, from 5-8 pm. Meet David and join us for hors d'oeuvres and wine.   David Dunlop’s solo show Light Fantastic offers a visually transformative experience in this exciting exhibition of 29 new and adventurous works. David is a master of luminosity. His use of multi-layered translucent glazes, reflective metal surfaces and bright underpainting result in paintings that appear to possess their own inner light. He paints on copper, galvanized steel, and brushed gold and silver laminated aluminum which give his work the radiance of Dutch and Italian Renaissance paintings. Historically, artists have quested for luminance, and like Dunlop, wanted their works to glow in their settings, whether it be daylight or candlelight.   David will give a talk and painting demonstration in the gallery garden on Saturday, May 11, from 2-3 pm.  David is well known for his lively and entertaining PBS series, Landscapes Through Time with David Dunlop, and has lectured at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Please RSVP (203) 318-0616 as space is limited, and bring a lawn chair. For more information

Nothing, Then Everything: Power Boothe at Lyman Allyn

Lyman Allyn Art Museum 625 Williams Street, New London

May 11 – August 4, 2024 Nothing, Then Everything brings together more than a dozen of Power Boothe’s large-scale abstract paintings in dialogue with his smaller canvases and works on paper, exploring the artist’s work and process. Using a grid structure as a starting point, Boothe engages color, line, shape, texture, and rhythm in his paintings, seeing each piece as a poetic event. This exhibition shows the shifts and the threads that run through Power Boothe’s artistic idiom over five decades of painting, with energetic, colorful, and bold canvases, as well as more quietly compelling ones. One section focuses on the artist’s drawings, showing framed works on paper as well as sketchbooks full of vivid compositions that visitors can see firsthand. For more information
