Black Bell: A Quartet for the End of Time: Poet/Performance Artist Alison Rollins

March 27 @ 12:00 pm

In-Person or ZOOM

A presentation from 2023–2024 Mary I. Bunting Institute Fellow Alison C. Rollins

Rollins will discuss her work toward the completion of her second poetry collection, titled “Black Bell,” and a creative nonfiction project, titled “Outside: Fieldnotes for Living Beyond Survival.” Imploring investigations of time and space through the lenses of love and liberation, Rollins will showcase performance art practices, including metalwork, which are in conversation with Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time and historical examples of Black fugitivity such as Henry Box Brown and Lear Green, figures who, hidden in crates, shipped themselves from slaveholding states to free states. Embodying the archive and thinking through frequencies of freedom and sounds of survival, Rollins constructs “Soundsuits,” or body armor, to meditate on the landscape of the Black body as both invisible and exposed, inside and outdoors.

Free and open to the public.

To view this event online, individuals will need to register via Zoom.
