Most of North America’s shorebird species winter in South & Central America, heading north breed in the high Arctic. Some of these birds breed in CT, while others start their northbound journey in mid-late summer. Join us as we look for many of our shorebird species at some of the best spots around southeastern Connecticut, and learn how you can help these charismatic birds. $13 for members; $18 for non-members. – Walk in East Lyme will be an approximately 1-1.5 mile walk on dirt and sandy terrain. Exposure to wind, sun, and heat possible depending on weather. Restrooms on site. – Walk in Old Lyme will be an approximately 1 mile walk on level sandy and rocky terrain. Teacher Summer Camp at Kellogg Environmental Center: Derby

Osborne Homestead Museum and Kellogg Estate gardens 500 Hawthorne Avenue, Derby

Summer workshop days for elementary and middle school teachers that provide experiences for teachers through exploration of forests, shorelines and more. Lesson plans, resources and materials are provided to allow you to recharge and spark ideas for next year. The camp is free, and you are welcome to bring your children with you or adults that may be visiting or co-teaching to experience the fun. Contact susan.quincy@ct.gov for additional information. Snacks and beverage will be provided. First session takes place at the Kellogg Center in Derby with a visit to a woodlot near-by. Additional days will take place in Portland, CT and New London, CT. The Ridgefield Historical Society and the Library present Hiking Ruins Southern New England: A Guide to 40 Sites in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island by Dr. Nick Bellantoni, Emeritus CT State Archaeologist, a guide to hiking archaeological sites in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. Many people have no idea that there are archaeological sites in the area, on public lands where they are allowed to hike. Each of the 40 hikes are described with a map and summary information that delivers the trail's vital statistics, including distance, difficulty, fees and permits, schedule, canine compatibility, and trail contacts. Directions to the trailhead are provided, along with a general description of what you'll see along the way.
