To the Editor:
As a twice-deployed infantry Marine, I have seen firsthand the devastation firearms can inflict—not just on the human body, but on the fabric of society. Tragically, these tools of war have become all too common in our communities. There are now more legally owned guns in the United States than people. The result? Thousands upon thousands of lives lost every year to gun violence.
There is a growing grassroots movement which is working to build a future free from gun violence. It is called Wear Orange. This national campaign’s aim is to raise awareness about the deadly toll of guns in our society, honor the lives of those affected by gun violence, and recognize the proven effective steps we can all take to protect our families and communities.
Because of the unchecked influence of gun lobbyists in our government, firearms are now the leading cause of death for children in America. For me this is totally unacceptable. We all can play a role in changing this sad fact.
As the month of June, which is National Gun Violence Awareness Month (in case you weren’t aware) draws to a close, will you join me in standing up for common-sense safety measures and honoring the victims of gun violence by Wear(ing) Orange?
As a U.S. Marine, I took an oath to defend this country. That oath didn’t end when I took off the uniform. Promoting responsibility, safety, and action around firearms is desperately needed—and long overdue.
