A Political Stunt From the Start

To the Editor:

I’m writing to respond to the Fairfield Republican Town Committee’s ongoing misinformation and attack campaign regarding the dissolution of the Parking Authority—much of it promoted by RTC Chair Laura Devlin.

Let’s be clear: the ordinance followed every legal step. It was properly noticed, held over, publicly debated, and approved in a transparent vote. The Town Attorney and the RTM Moderator both confirmed it was fully legal.

Despite that, Representatives Jeff Steele and Meghan McCloat introduced a resolution to rescind the vote based entirely on false procedural claims. When those claims were debunked, neither took responsibility nor offered a correction. Worse, the RTC allowed the misinformation to spread unchallenged. Under Chair Devlin’s leadership, they remained silent while misleading posts circulated—never setting the record straight.

And this wasn’t just misinformation—it became a targeted attack campaign. Town officials were called out by name, accused of misconduct, and subjected to public distrust based on a knowingly false narrative. This was not about ensuring good governance. It was a calculated political move—designed to damage this administration and sow division in our community.

What’s happening in Fairfield echoes what we see on the national stage. It’s the MAGA playbook: deny the facts, double down on the lies, and attack the other side. This is now the fourth or fifth version of the story, each one shifting to preserve a political agenda. It’s not about transparency or process—it’s about creating chaos to hurt those in charge.

During my time on the RTM, I had been encouraged by a spirit of bipartisan cooperation. But this episode has been deeply disheartening. Watching respected members of our community embrace a strategy built on distortion for political gain has been a wake-up call.

Let’s be honest: this was a political stunt from the start—meant to stir outrage and undermine a legitimate, well-vetted policy decision. I encourage residents to see for themselves. You can watch the video of Representative Steele attempting to gut his own resolution at the 23:13 mark here.

Fairfield deserves better. Facts matter. Truth matters. And leadership should be about service—not spectacle.
