OLD LYME — Tests of the well water at the Lymes’ Senior Center last weekend have shown it to be potable again after staff installed a UV light filter earlier this month, but more work will be needed to address other local well woes at Hains Park and Town Woods Park, First Selectman Bonnie Reemsnyder told the Board of Selectmen at their Monday night meeting.
This means the senior center can get back to business as usual after relying on paper plates, hand sanitizer, and bottled water for almost the entire past summer.
In regularly scheduled water tests in June, the senior center’s 450-foot-deep well tested positive for coliform bacteria, and Town Woods Park’s 250-foot well tested positive for coliform and E. coli.
The senior center well tested negative (which means the water is safe) last weekend, but recent tests of the Town Woods have continued to show the bacteria, Reemsnyder said.
“We focused on the senior center first because there’s so much activity at the senior center,” Reemsnyder said. It’s not yet clear what they’ll have to do next on Town Woods well, she added.
Additionally, a third well at Hains Park has been at diminished capacity, sometimes as low as only one gallon per minute, since the spring, Reemsnder said. The town has selected a contractor to drill a new well at the park, but the contractor will first need to get a state permit for the drilling.
