Series: “In Sickness and in Health ‘til Death do us Part” at Nathan Hale Homestead

“In Sickness and in Health ‘til Death do us Part” is a new three-part series happening this September at the Nathan Hale Homestead. On September 4th, 11th, and 18th from 6:30 pm to 8 pm, guest speakers will guide attendees through 18th-century life by exploring medical techniques, demonstrating a day in the life of a midwife, and examining death care practices.
On September 4th, join Daniel Newman, historical researcher and reenactor spanning 40 years, to experience the surgery of an 18th-century physician during “The Doctor is In: An Evening With an 18th-Century Doctor.” Learn about the latest medical techniques from England, while discussing remedies and cures that would have been available during that time.
Beverly Willnauer, a forty-plus year veteran in the reenactment community and member of the Nathan Hale Homestead, will discuss and demonstrate a day in the life of an 18th-century midwife on September 11th during her program, “From Birth to Death and Everything in Between: The Work of an 18th-Century Midwife.”
From birth and sickness to death, the final event of the series on September 18th, “Layer-Out of the Dead,” will feature practicing Connecticut and Rhode Island embalmer and funeral director Nicole Paquette, who will discuss death care practices and rituals through the centuries.
