Long Wharf Theater: ENGLISH by Sanaz Toossi
On stage January 16th through February 1st, English arrives in partnership with TheaterWorks Hartford and Southern Connecticut State University for a shared exploration of identity, belonging, and the courage it takes to speak in new ways. This intimate, deeply human story resonates far beyond the classroom — touching anyone who has ever tried to find connection across differences.
At Long Wharf Theatre, we strive to create space for stories that deepen our understanding of one another and reflect the complexities of our world. Sanaz Toossi’s English does just that, inviting us into an Iranian classroom where language becomes a site of hope, humor, and quiet struggle. Under Arya Shahi’s direction, this Pulitzer Prize-winning play reveals how learning a new voice can open doors — while also asking what parts of ourselves we risk leaving behind in the process.
