“Everything Trembles: Art and Complexity”
Presented by
Despite rumors to the contrary, paintings and drawings are never still. Our eyes are constantly moving while our brains race through possibilities, fragments of memories, joys and traumas, all in an attempt to enact (comprehend) what we see. Our muscles engage, we are on a drunkard’s path, a journey to “grasp” what we feel only in our gut. Words fail. Drawings and paintings bring forth a world that is rich with human meaning, a world that enfolds over time, (sometimes a lifetime) in an ongoing adventure of understanding and miss-reading. Artworks may be the most complex objects we make because, as objects they must be transformed by the viewer’s imaginative capacity to bring them to life, in all their complexity. A painting or drawing cannot ‘come to life’ without an observer who is willing to sync up with an artwork’s invitation to play. When this happens the object disappears as a material object and transforms into a deeply “felt” human event. Classical science celebrates objectivity, it seeks a description that is independent of human consciousness. Complexity does not exclude the embodied observer, embedded in a physical and a social world. Art is specific and subjective, and its truth is subjective, is not arbitrary. Art is simply there, a truth hidden in plain sight, a truth that is thought and felt and imagined, a truth that words can not fully explain.
