Film Screening of Eva Hesse and a Q+A with the filmmaker at MoCA Westport

In conjunction with Enough Already, MoCA\CT is hosting a screening of Marcie Begleiter’s 2016 documentary film, Eva Hesse. This bold exhibition expresses the collectors’ personal interest in finding emergent artistic voices and powerful artistic statements that speak to prominent social issues of the day, including those relating to LGBTQ+ communities and reproductive rights. All major mediums are included: paintings, sculptures, works on paper, photographs and textiles. Themes range from humorous and irreverent to thought-provoking.
This film speaks on Eva Hesse, a German born American artist who was seen as central to the New York art scene in the 60s going into the 70s when she passed away. With this film, we will dive into the story of Hesse, her trials, accomplishments and how her story and legacy surpasses her still to this day.
The audience will get a better understanding of Hesse and get a deeper look into the creative community of New York and Germany in the 1960s.
Throughout the documentary there are interviews from celebrated artists such as Richard Serra, Robert and Sylvia Plimack Mangold, Dan Graham, Nancy Holt, Carl Andre, Hesse’s husband Tom Doyle and her friend + writer Lucy Lippard who speak on Hesse’s works, her life and the 60s. Alongside their interviews and many others, the trajectory of this film is covered by Hesse’s journals.
Following the screening, there will be a Q+A with the documentary filmmaker, Marcie Begleiter through zoom. We are excited to hear from the creator of this film—join us as we learn more about Eva Hesse.
