Eastern Connecticut State’s Poverty Awareness Marathon

November 7, 2024 @ 7:00 am - 3:00 pm

After a six-year break, Eastern Connecticut State University’s Poverty Awareness Marathon is returning for its 12th running on Nov. 7. The 26.2-mile walk/run begins at 7:00 a.m. outside at the Student Center amphitheater.

Each lap around campus measures 1.2 miles, with participants allotted 22 minutes per lap. The final lap is expected to begin around 2:42 p.m. Throughout the event, volunteers will collect nonperishable food items for the Shawn’s Cupboard on-campus food pantry and the Covenant Soup Kitchen in Willimantic.

The Eastern community is encouraged to participate in the marathon or cheer on walkers and runners throughout the day. “This event is an opportunity for the campus to unite around an important cause,” said business Professor Charlie Chatterton, marathon organizer.

“By supporting Shawn’s Cupboard and the Covenant Soup Kitchen, the marathon raises awareness about food insecurity – both on campus and off – and encourages us to consider what proactive steps we can take to address it.”

The Poverty Awareness Marathon is a collaborative effort between the College of Business, Student Athlete Advisory Committee, Center for Community Engagement, and the Foundation for Campus Ministry.
