“Dooley at the Bar” Premieres at Westport Community Theatre

During the Gilded Age, America’s favorite sage, sociologist, philosopher, and
news analyst was Mr. Dooley, a bartender invented by a Chicago newspaper editor, Finley Peter Dunne.Though hardly remembered today, Dunne’s humorous newpaper columns were touchstones of American life, read all over the country and around the world. His diverse readership included Mark Twain, Teddy Roosevelt, and James Joyce; movie actor Dooley Wilson (Casablanca) named himself after the bartender. Mr. Dooley’s opinions were so influential, they were read aloud at White House cabinet meetings; robber barons and politicians lived in fear of the bartender’s sarcasm.Mr. Dooley comes to life at Westport Community Theatre in Dooley at the Bar, a one-man show created and performed by Alexander Kulcsar, directed by Michael Stanley. The play, which opens WCT’s 68th Season, runs for ten performances, September12 – 28, 2025
