Christian Peltenburg Brechneff at Hill-Stead Museum
The Hidden Gardens of Hill-Stead museum and La Malbaie.
In Hill-Stead’s Secret Gardens, artist Christian Peltenburg-Brechneff bridges the gap between
what was and what might be through his luminous paintings. Working in gouache on Twinrocker
paper, he presents contemporary views of the Sunken Garden, paired with imaginative
renderings of the Wild Walking Garden resurrected in spirit. His works offer dialogue between
memory and possibility, placing visitors at the threshold between past and future.
Alongside his Hill-Stead–inspired works, the exhibition features selections from Peltenburg-
Brechneff’s Jardins de Quatre-Vents series, depicting views of this exquisite private garden in
La Malbaie, Quebec. These paintings reinforce themes of botanical imagination, landscape
transformation, and the porous boundary between art and nature.
