Progress Won’t Come From Political Spin in Montville

To the Editor:

It’s becoming increasingly frustrating to watch the rewriting of Montville’s recent history for political gain. The residents of Montville deserve honesty about who actually led the projects now being used as campaign talking points.

Both the high school track and field project and the new boat launch and fishing pier were initiated under Republican leadership, long before the current administration tried to claim them as Democratic accomplishments. The track project was completed under Board of Education Chairman Wills Pike, whose persistence and leadership ensured it was done properly and efficiently. These projects were funded entirely by taxpayer dollars, not through state legislative assistance or special grants as implied. The true credit belongs to the residents of Montville — the people who paid for them.

The administration continues to promote a narrative of “no tax increases” and “fiscal responsibility.” Yet, the 2024–2025 town budget was overspent by approximately $1.8 million, and multiple line items in the current budget have already exceeded 100% of their allocations. That’s not fiscal responsibility — that’s financial mismanagement. When government spends beyond its means, it’s only a matter of time before taxpayers are forced to pay the price.

The Mayor’s handling of early voting has also raised legitimate concerns. The chosen location required extensive last-minute fixes — including floor tiles being taped down to cover missing sections — a clear ADA compliance issue that should never have been overlooked. Instead of ensuring accessibility and safety for all voters, the situation was rushed, reactive, and poorly managed. Montville’s citizens deserve better than temporary tape solutions when it comes to their right to vote.

This pattern of self-promotion, poor oversight, and blurred accountability has become all too familiar. The current administration continues to celebrate projects started by others while ignoring the mounting fiscal and administrative issues under its own watch. Leadership means taking responsibility — not taking credit.

Montville is at a crossroads. We can continue down a path where image matters more than integrity, or we can insist on leadership grounded in transparency, fiscal discipline, and respect for the people who actually make this town work — its residents and taxpayers.

Progress doesn’t come from political spin. It comes from honesty, accountability, and hard work. Montville’s residents deserve leadership that serves the community, not the headlines.

Elections have consequences. This November, let’s make sure Montville moves forward with leaders who tell the truth, manage responsibly, and put the people — not politics — first.
