A Vote for Old Lyme, Not for Politics

To the Editor:

My words may be simple, but they come from a place of deep conviction. The upcoming election for Town Council isn’t about party lines—it’s not a Republican, Democrat, Independent, or Conservation issue. It’s about what’s best for Old Lyme.

Bigger isn’t always better. Better is better.

We need to stay engaged, especially when it comes to zoning. I’ve seen what happens when zoning changes take hold—first in my old neighborhoods in the Bronx and Westchester County, and more recently in nearby towns like East Lyme and Old Saybrook. Over time, they’ve become too crowded, too busy—losing a bit of what made them special.

Here in Old Lyme, the proposed overlay on Halls Road feels like overkill. We don’t need three-story buildings or parking garages that change the character of our town. What we do need is thoughtful development: safer sidewalks, better bike and walking paths, and updated, welcoming signage. These are the kinds of improvements that preserve the charm of Old Lyme while making it more livable.

As an independent voter, I’m proud to support the Mesham-Read team 100%. John and Jude are the right leaders, at the right time, for the right reasons. They are honest, fair, transparent—and most importantly, they love Old Lyme as much as we all do. They’ve made a clear commitment to do what’s best for our town.

Let’s elect people who will protect the character of Old Lyme and guide its future with care and common sense.
