‘Unity Over Partisanship’

To the Editor:

As a resident of East Lyme, I urge fellow voters to consider a choice rooted in wisdom and individuality. Vote for Richard Steel as an unaffiliated candidate for a seat on the Board of Selectmen.

George Washington warned political parties would become “potent engines” of division, prioritizing their own interests over those of the people. His fears are now realized. Polarization has paralyzed progress and turned neighbors into opponents.

I represent something different—someone who doesn’t answer to party bosses, national agendas, nor partisan pressure. I bring commonsense solutions grounded in our local needs, and community requirements. My candidacy is an opportunity to return to leaders serving people, not parties.

“One of the most frustrating aspects of our political discourse is the expectation that once you’re identified on a side, you are somehow betraying your side if you speak up when it goes terribly wrong. Partisans are used to ignoring their opponents, but there might be a chance they will listen” — David French.

Let’s take that chance, send a clear message that East Lyme values innovative thought and unity over partisanship.
