EAST LYME — Four cars were stolen in the Niantic area on the evening of November 9-10, the latest in a series of car thefts happening throughout Connecticut and the greater New England area this year.

Mike Finkelstein, Chief of Police in East Lyme, said these thefts are something that affect the shoreline towns “in waves.”

The four cars stolen were a Highlander, an Escape, a Ford and a Passat. Two of the four were discovered in New Britain; the other two remain missing. No one has yet been identified in connection with the theft.

In addition to the four stolen cars, several other vehicles were broken into and had property stolen from them. Finkelstein said someone used credit cards taken from one of the vehicles at two stores in New Britain between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. last night. A car reported stolen in Wallingford also turned up in East Lyme last night.

Finkelstein urged people to keep their car doors locked. The thefts, he said, happened when people took advantage of the fact that cars were being left unlocked at night.

“We are not experiencing cars … getting windows smashed,” said Finkelstein.
The East Lyme Police Department is asking anyone with information to contact them. They can be reached at 860-739-5000.
