I believe it’s important that we have local elected officials that are focused on issues that affect us here. For federal issues, we have a Congressman and two Senators who were elected to represent us in DC. Our State Rep, Devin Carney, has consistently been there for Lyme, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, and Westbrook and has been focused on our needs.
As an Old Lyme Selectman, I want a representative who will not support giving additional power to the State of Connecticut. I think we run things well in Old Lyme – our property taxes are low, our schools are good, our town is safe, and our property values are strong. Devin understands all of this and has stood up to both the state and federal governments when they’ve tried to wrestle power from us. There is non-stop talk in Hartford about taking away local control on a variety of issues from schools to zoning to car taxes and, in my opinion, this won’t be good for our towns. I am confident Devin will stand up for us against this.
As a small business owner, I am concerned about how state policy will affect my ability to earn a living. It seems at the Capitol, everyone thinks that small business owners can weather additional tax increases and that couldn’t be further from the truth. Just last year, there were proposals to raise taxes on services many small business owners rely on like legal and accounting services. Devin defeated these concepts and is the only candidate in the race who said he would oppose new taxes.
Devin is someone I know our area can count on and someone many of us have gotten to know. He will always put people over politics and will always put us first. He has earned my vote and I hope you will join me in voting to send him back to Hartford.
