With the phased reopening of Connecticut’s economy and government functions underway, many individuals across the state are wondering when the Department of Motor Vehicles will open its doors for tests, licenses and registrations.

For now, the answer to most of those continues to be “not yet.”

The department is expecting a substantial backlog of services required and tests that will need to be performed when they finally do reopen their doors. How that backlog will be cleared up, and whether that will require additional hours or staff, has not yet been decided.

Here are five things to know about what is and what is not allowed and available through the DMV during the current phase of the COVID-19 reopening.

  1. All individuals and businesses with a license, permit, disability placard or identification card that expires between March 10 and June 30, 2020 are granted a 180-day extension.

  2. All vehicle or boat registrations, temporary registrations, school bus proficiency tests and emissions tests that are due for renewal between March 10 and June 30, 2020 are granted a 180-day extension.

  3. Out-of-state drivers who have moved to Connecticut since March 10, or are planning to move to Connecticut in 2020, will be granted a 180-day extension for obtaining a license, registration and emissions inspection for their vehicle.

  4. All VIN verifications are waived until September 10, 2020.

  5. New driver tests are currently postponed and a date for when tests will resume has not yet been determined.
