Ron Turner joined the staff at Lyme-Old Lyme Schools as the new facilities director at the end of February, just before the schools closed for COVID-19.

“The first couple weeks I was off to a great start, meeting the staff and students, and then the sky kind of fell with COVID hitting,” Turner said. “I’m really hoping to meet everyone in the fall, I can’t underscore that enough. Since the shutdown, I think that’s what so many of us are struck by the most. Buildings don’t become a school until staff, students and members of the community are here. I would love to have them back.”

Turner served as a state trooper for 22 years before becoming the director of operations in East Haddam. During his tenure as a resident state trooper in Bolton and working for the town of East Haddam, Turner said his favorite part was his time in the schools.

“I always strove to be present in the schools and I was always struck by the energy and potential within the schools,” Turner said.

Turner said he has always been impressed by the quality of the Lyme-Old Lyme Schools and is proud to now be a member of the community.

During his first few years Turner said he intends to help facilitate the development of a five-year facility plan that will guide the administration and the board of education about major school construction and maintenance projects that will be needed. Some of those projects may include environmental sustainability improvements that Turner said he is passionate about discussing.

“I like to think of myself as an important member of the community and I want the community to know my door is always open,” he said. “If they have any questions please reach out. If there is anything they would like to have improved upon, that’s what we are here for.”
