U.S. News Ranks Groton Magnet 10th in State, Lyme-Old Lyme 17th, Old Saybrook 22nd

Marine Science Magnet High School in Groton ranks 10th in the state and 532nd nationally of public high schools according to the U.S. News & World Report’s 2020 rankings.

“LEARN’s Marine Science Magnet High School is a special community of intensely committed educators, students, and families,” said LEARN Associate Executive Director Dr. Ryan Donlon. “It is an honor to have the hard work and partnership of these three groups be recognized by U.S. News & World Report.”

In Connecticut, 207 high schools were analyzed for the report and nationally 17,792 schools were included.

The report highlighted Marine Science Magnet’s 100% graduation rate, high performance on statewide testing and unique breadth of courses offered. 

“The work ethic and grit shown by our students demonstrates that they truly live our core belief that effort creates ability by showing up and working hard every day,” said Colleen Hardison, MSMHS assistant principal. “I am consistently impressed with the dedication of MSMHS teachers to prepare students and push them to reach their full potential.”

In addition to Marine Science Magnet, Lyme-Old Lyme High School and Old Saybrook Senior High School ranked in the top 25, at 17 and 22 respectively.

“We just found out on Friday that we were named the 17th best public high school in Connecticut,” said Ian Neviaser, superintendent of Lyme-Old Lyme Schools. “It’s nice to get some positive feedback, recognition and news even during this strange time.”

The report noted Lyme-Old Lyme’s Advanced Placement opportunities, breadth of curriculum including art and music classes and student to teacher ratio as among the school’s strengths.

The report recognized Old Saybrook for its high performance on statewide testing, graduation rate and economically diverse student body.
